The Dr. Phil Train Wreck
That’s how my mind’s been referring to the Dr. Phil family (Alexandra, Katherine, Marty and Erin) he has on each Monday and has been advising for six years.
(Dr. Phil website)
I keep asking myself why in the world any individual would put themselves through the humiliation of airing their never-ending problems on national TV. I also have to wonder exactly what good their counseling with Dr. Phil has done for them.
The public first met Alexandra when she was a blonde, pregnant fifteen-year-old. At the time, Dr. Phil warned the family that she was at risk of becoming pregnant again because of self-esteem issues.
Talk about accurate. She’s now on her third pregnancy with yet a third man. Each of her children has different fathers. The last one served time – this new one might have, too – I can’t recall.
You’d think she’d have gotten some insight into what she was doing wrong by having her life dissected yearly on national TV, but no. She seems totally clueless as to the consequences of her actions and has complete disregard for the innocent lives she’s bringing into this world under less-than-ideal circumstances.
I know there are many who are routing for her and her children. But really, wasn’t two children enough? The first two have been removed from her custody. Who knows when or if she’ll get them back. When do we tell these individuals that their personal problems do not give them the right to have child after child in the failed hope of trapping a guy into a marriage or giving them a reason for being or the love they feel they missed.
We’re all stressed. From time to time, we’re all unhappy, lost, searching for something that works in our lives. To bring a child into the mix before we’re fully adult and able to devote our time to that child, rather than hoping the child will fix us, is just wrong.
Alexandra doesn’t get it. You can see it by the clueless expression on her face. I stopped feeling sorry for her after the first baby was born and she went on to get pregnant with the second. Those kids need an adult to take care of them, not a person who has no insight into her feelings and keeps repeating the same mistakes over and over.
I’m assuming Dr. Phil continues to work with these people because they’re an ongoing train wreck that boosts his ratings. It’s really a sad day for TV and for the innocent children involved.
