Little Girls Growing Up Way Too Fast
(Drawing from PhotoBucket)
Whoa, I just read a disturbing article on msnbc.com about seven-year-old girls reaching puberty. Can you imagine that? Little girls getting acne and their chests developing?
I don’t know about anyone else out there, but this is freaking disturbing.
I can’t recall what I was doing at seven, but I know I wasn’t shopping for bras. Nor did I know what acne was. I think it’s safe to say I’d never even heard the word at that point.
Not only is precocious puberty hard on a child when her peers still look very much like children – as they should – but according to the article, there’s also concern about an increase in breast cancer with kids who get their periods too soon.
Believe me, I’ve never been into organic produce nor have I worried endlessly about what’s in our food and water. However, when the occurence of seven-year-olds reaching puberty is no longer a rarity, even I think it’s time for concern.
With all the chemicals and pesticides in our soil, and the hormones we pump into farm animals, it seems we’ve finally done the unthinkable – altering children’s lives. Childhood is the one time when they should be carefree, when they should be having fun, when they shouldn’t have to worry about stuff that is usually the domain of thirteen and fourteen year olds.
It almost too scary to think of what’s next.
