And another monster’s life is spared
John Gardner

John Gardner, the rapist/killer of two California teens recently copped to a guilty plea in order to avoid the death penalty.
News reports claim Gardner cried during the anguished testimony of the girls’ devastated family members. Reports also state that he grew angry when Candice Moncayo, a jogger who smashed him in his nose with her elbow to escape his attack, made mention of how she outwitted him.
Funny how his tears turned so quickly to rage when his manhood – or what he considers his manhood, is threatened. Of course, there’s an explanation for his behavior and his crimes. He had a bad childhood, he wasn’t treated right, he couldn’t help himself.
Bull. Bull. Bull.
If not for the fact of the plea deal – given only because he agreed to tell the Dubois family where he’d buried the remains of their fourteen-year-old daughter Amber – this monster would be on death row.
But no. He’s now going to live out his life with the taxpayers of California footing the bill. Surely, he’ll find God. That’s step one in his I’m-a-changed-man scheme. Step two: he’ll be the model prisoner. But, of course. Cowards like this don’t mess with men as big as they are – men who are armed. They only have the courage to prey on teenaged girls. Step three: he’ll get some well-intentioned and misinformed individual to fight for his release. . .because he really didn’t mean to rape and kill anyone…it was a mistake…it was an accident. Besides, he’s different now, he’s a changed man (go back to step one for that). Step four will be when he realizes he ain’t getting out – then he’ll have to choose from his legion of jail-house groupies to see which he wants to marry. And there will be some very misguided women who’ll oblige him. Step five will be when he fights for conjugal visits, that denying him sex with his beloved wife is cruel and unusual punishment. Step six will be his attempt at escape (this could also be steps two, three, four or five, depending upon how desperate he is to get outside to kill a teenaged girl again). The epilogue to this tale will be another prisoner’s retribution and Gardner’s death at the hands of that man or men. Because even the worst of the worst have an honor code. You don’t rape and kill teen-aged girls no matter how bad your own life may have been.
What do you want to bet all of his righteous anger will be gone when he’s the victim? What do you want to bet that for the first time his tears will be real?
